A smooth and creamy matcha latte that balances the earthy, umami-rich flavor of ceremonial grade matcha with velvety steamed milk. This cafe favorite offers the perfect introduction to matcha with its approachable taste and beautiful jade green color. Lightly sweetened and topped with a delicate foam art design.
Ingredients
- 2 teaspoons ceremonial grade matcha powder
- 2 tablespoons hot water (175°F)
- 1 cup milk of choice (dairy, oat, or almond)
- 1-2 teaspoons maple syrup or honey (adjust to taste)
- Pinch of vanilla extract (optional)
Instructions
- Sift the matcha powder into a small bowl to remove any lumps
- Add hot water to the matcha and whisk vigorously in a "W" motion using a bamboo whisk (chasen) until frothy and well combined
- Heat milk in a saucepan or steam using an espresso machine until hot but not boiling
- Add sweetener and vanilla to the milk, then froth using a milk frother or French press
- Pour the matcha mixture into a large mug
- Slowly pour the steamed milk into the mug, holding back the foam with a spoon
- Spoon the remaining foam on top and create latte art if desired
- Serve immediately while hot
